Pine Needle Baskets

Elaine Tanner, an award-winning quilter, expanded her skills with needle and thread when she began making pine needle baskets. She used walnut slices as the center and as accents throughout her first baskets. When she saw the first piece of wood cut from one of the ancient cypress trees, she started working on a plan to incorporate the wood into her basket bases. She designed a variety of shapes and sizes and commissioned local artists to do the artwork. Since then she has used other varieties of wood as the bases and no two baskets are alike. She finds that the natural beauty of the pine needles enhances the beauty of the wood and that the two join in harmony to create a very special piece of artwork.
