John Tanner has been a nature conservationist most of his adult life. He has also been a wild turkey enthusiast since the first wild turkeys were restocked near his South Carolina home in 1975.

In 2003, when the first Ancient Cypress was discovered, Tanner became active in helping the founders of Ancient Cypress, LLC with their public relations. Tanner, a wild turkey fanatic, was drawn to try his hand at making a call out of the ancient wood. His first acceptable call evolved after many trial and error and self-taught lessons. It was then that he realized he had gotten involved with something intriguing. Working with the wood inspired his interest to the point that he could not put it down.

"Box of Time" was chosen as the name of a limited edition series box call that represents his first work. Each surface on the call depicts approximately seventy five years of growth climate data from a period 45,000 years before present, making it truly a "Box of Time". He has now expanded his call making efforts to include calls made of South Carolina Black Walnut, African Mahogany, Brazilian Mahogany and Red Cedar.
